The mode switching method uses axial expansion or contraction of the coil turns of a tubular coil (2) for transport of the heat transfer medium, separating the combustion space from the exhaust gas space (9), for altering the flow width of the helical gap defined between the coil turns, for switching between the combustion and heating operating modes for the boiler. An Independent claim for a heating boiler switched between heating and combustion modes is also included.
