Process for adjusting the water hardness comprises acquiring an actual degree of water hardness at a fixed measuring point; producing a degree of hardness to be adjusted; processing the degree of hardness and obtaining a mixed control signal for the operation of the water hardening plant and/or process water cycle; and utilizing the control signal in a water hardening device to adjust an actual mixing ratio between soft and crude water and between process and feed water. Process for adjusting the water hardness in a water hardening plant (3A, 3B) and/or process water cycle (29) comprises acquiring an actual degree of water hardness at a fixed measuring point (13a, 29b), especially at the inlet and/or outlet of the water blending plant; producing a degree of hardness to be adjusted; processing the degree of hardness and obtaining a mixed control signal (VSS, ASS, SPS) for the operation of the water hardening plant and/or process water cycle; and utilizing the control signal in a water hardening device (21, 27a, 33) to adjust an actual mixing ratio between soft and crude water and between process and feed water. Preferred Features: The degree of water hardness is kept constant or within a constant range in the optimized region.
