The cylinder block has cylinder bores (17) for pistons with piston rings. It has a separate plate or ring-shaped insert part (13) of highly wear-resistant material, in which the cylinder bores are formed. The insert is cast or pressed into the cylinder block, or screwed inside it. It consists of a tribological material, esp. hypereutectic aluminum alloy, a sintered material, or a spray-compacted dispersion-hardened aluminum alloy. The insert part is fabricated by extrusion.
