Reducing cholesterol levels in body fluids and tissues e.g. human blood, by administration of pentaerythritol mono-, di-, tri- or tetranitrate

Pentaerythritol mono-, di-, tri- or tetranitrate (I) is used for reducing the cholesterol concentration in the tissues and fluids of organisms. Independent claims are also included for: (i) Pentaerythritol mono-, di-, tri- or tetranitrate (I)-containing pharmaceutical compositions for reducing the cholesterol concentration in the tissues and fluids of the human organism; and (ii) the use of (I) for the preparation of compositions as in (i). - ACTIVITY : Antilipemic. In tests in guinea pigs, addition of 0.5% cholesterol to the feed over 2 months induced a ca. 6-fold increase in cholesterol level (control group). If 6 mg/kg per day of pentaerythritol tetranitrate (Ia) was additionally added to the feed, the cholesterol level was reduced by more than 30% relative to the control group. - MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given in the source material.
