In a laboratory process to treat cytological or histological preparations in e.g. an automated dye assembly, the test items are transported on slides and in magazines to a series of work stations where they are treated in accordance with pre-programmed and selected sequences. The process incorporates especially an automated system to monitor the presence and condition of usable reagents within pre-determined parameters.
