A method of refining a powder by using ultrasound involves generating separate sound pulses with amplitudes of at least several MPa, e.g. up to several 10MPa, and a pulse duration typically of microseconds, by a thermo-hydraulic shock wave source (1). The sound waves are transmitted into the powder by a medium which dose not react with the powder being treated. Agglomerations in the powder are broken up, even at high binding forces, with the discrete sound pulses.
