A equalizer (24) uses first input signal values (y(k)) and filter coefficient values to calculate output signal values that rely less strongly on the transmission properties of a transmission link (16) than the input signal values. The values from the filter coefficients are used to determine functions for weighting, transmission, step response or frequency for the transmission link matching the step response. Independent claims are also included for the following; (1) a receiving device for determining the transmission properties of a transmission link, (2) for a device for determining the transmission properties of an echo link; (3) for a program with a sequence of commands to execute the method of the present invention by using a processor.
