Method for measuring current amplitude in a conductor (1) by determination of the magnetic field generated by the conductor. For frequency independent measurements the following steps are undertaken: provision of a slit (11) in a section of the conductor (10), insertion of magnetic field sensors (15, 16) within the conductor, detection of the magnetic field within the sensors and generation of a corresponding output signal, with the current amplitude determined from the output signal. An independent claim is made for a measurement method in which a comb-type conductor section is placed in the conductor and an AMR, GMR or LMT type magnetic sensor used to determine the magnetic field just above or below the conductor section and determination of the current amplitude from the measured field strength.
