Production of a sorbent (I) for ad- or absorbing substances from solutions or gases comprises drying and comminuting Vaucheria seaweed harvested from the wild. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a process for producing a bioindicator (II), comprising drying Vaucheria seaweed harvested from the wild or from sterile cultivation; (2) a process for purifying (M2) solutions or gases, comprising passing them through (I); (3) a method for determining and/or detecting (M4) heavy metals in solutions or gases, comprising contacting (II) with the solutions or gases and observing the discoloration and/or another morphological change in (II); (4) a process for regenerating (I), comprising eluting (I) with an aqueous solution or buffer with a pH of 0-12.
