Electronically coded lock system has a locking mechanism that can be blocked or released on receipt of an invalid or valid code. The code evaluation device has a wireless interface via which data from an external authentication pass with a code generator are received. The code evaluator has a second wireless connection to a central unit from which authentication data can be downloaded and used to update its memory. Alternately the lock can connect to the central unit in order to request authentication of an authentication pass code.
