The support or supporting frame consists of a bearing (7) for the end-frame (2) and a base (8) taking a threaded spindle (9) whose bottom end rests in a trough (11) on the edge (17) of the ground-frame (4). The top end of the spindle (9) has an extension head (10) exposed with the cover (1) off for key engagement. The end-frame (2) supports the cover (1) on edge (12) and has an adjoining side part (13) for a manhole jack. Several removable height-adjustable supports (3) are arranged round the edge (17) of the ground-frame (4) or alternatively a height-adjustable and removable supporting frame to take the end-frame (2) as seated removably on the ground-frame (4). The end-frame (2) supports the manhole cover (1) which can be lowered right down in the ground-frame (4) once the supports or supporting frame have been removed.
