The operating method has each individually inflated chamber (14) of the mattress (1) supplied with a pressure medium for obtaining a given pressure level, with automatic adjustment of the pressure level for each chamber in accordance with a given pressure profile. The pressure within each chamber can be detected periodically for switching between alternate pressure profiles for regulation of the pressure.
