The gas burner has an ionisation electrode for monitoring the function of the pilot light and the main burner, with a setting element operated in dependence on the flame signal provided by the ionisation electrode and a required value. Simultaneous with the release of the main gas flow to the main burner, the auxiliary gas flow to the pilot light is set to an initial opening value (U), with continuous increasing of the latter opening value after holding it constant for a timed duration (Z), when the flame signal for the main gas burner fails to reach a given level, until the end of the safety ignition interval.
