Known piston compressors generate a large proportion of lost heat. This has a negative influence on the energy balance of the piston compressor and costly cooling measures are required to protect the piston compressor. The invention therefore provides that the variable-volume free space (19) that is always present on the piston compressor (1) is configured as a pressure and suction chamber, and that said variable-volume free space (19) is connected to the atmosphere by the interior of the electric motor (2).
