The switch has at least one contact device with cooperating movable and stationary contacts (10,12), a device (14) for detecting the amplitude and direction of the load current and an evaluation circuit (16) for releasing the switch upon detection of an overload, a current loop (20) providing a conductor path supplied with a switching current for providing electrodynamic forces assisting the opening movement of the contact device. The switching current flows in the same direction as the load current in a first section of the conductor loop and in opposition to the load current in a second section of the conductor loop.
