Chemically different fluids (22,23) are supplied independently to separate chambers (I,II) of an applicator unit and their temperature and pressure parameters are set as required. The surface of a substrate is then coated in a single operation by direct transfer of both the first fluid for improving adhesion and wetting behavior and the second fluid. An independent claim is made for the process equipment in which chambers (I,II) of the applicator unit are separated from each other and the external environment by doctor blades (10,13,17) and the surface of a transfer roll (4) of the applicator has equi-spaced grooves (19), for taking up the different fluids (22,23) from the chambers.
