A process for separating and/or cleansing a liquid medium comprises supplying the liquid to a membrane to separate out a retentate. There is a concentration difference between the medium and the permeate, and the latter is removed along with a foreign agent. Transmembrane pressure is applied to the medium. The volume of the medium is held constant by the addition of a solvent.
