The sliver (2) feed (1) to a spinner carries the sliver through a loosening roller (3) where the sliver is broken down into fibers (4), to be laid on a gathering surface (6) as a thin fiber web (7). The laid fibers are condensed to one side by suction, to be taken off through a twisting jet (11) as a spun yarn (12). One side edge (25) of the suction opening (24) is on the movement direction of the gathering surface, and the other side edge is at an acute angle to the surface movement direction. The sliver feed to a spinner, to break it down into fibers, has a moving gathering surface with one side edge along the movement direction outside the suction opening zone, with a reinforcement against distortion. The suction opening has initial side edges parallel to each other, across the width, followed by tapering side edges at an acute angle. They come together as parallel edges with a narrow gap between them to form a narrow suction slit at the clamping point (8). The suction opening is connected successively to a number of suction chambers (33-35), each with different pressure levels. A shrouding (36) covers the fibers at the run of the suction opening edges, without contact. The acute angle of the side edge, not aligned with the surface movement direction, gives a steady increase in the angle. A dedicated pair of rollers can be installed as the clamping point.
