A film base for image recording materials with a carrier material and a polymer layer comprising at least one (co)polymer of acid number at least 10 and an ethoxylate compound is new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) Image recording material comprising a film carrier, an image recording film and if necessary other functional films, the film carrier having a specific adjustable Cobb value of 0-60; and (2) A process for preparation of the film base by contacting a temporary carrier material having a polymer layer from an aqueous polymer coating composition, in amount 3-20 g/m2, with another carrier material, and transfer of the polymer layer from the temporary carrier material to the second carrier material, after which the temporary carrier material is pulled off.
