Production of 1,6-hexane diols involves: (i) reacting formaldehyde with propenes (optionally substituted in the 2-position with alkyl or aryl) to give corresponding homo-allyl alcohols, (ii) metathesis in presence of a metathesis catalyst to give 3-hexene-1,6-diols and (iii) catalytic hydrogenation.
