Synthesizing an arrangement of many oligonucleotides (ON) on a solid phase, is new. Synthesizing an arrangement of many oligonucleotides (ON) on a solid phase comprising: (a) a monomer (M), in solution, is applied to the surface of the solid where it reacts with either an unprotected functional group or with a surface-bound ON that has no terminal protecting group; (b) the acid-labile protecting group on (M) is then cleaved by applying one or more drops of non-volatile, acid-containing reagent to the site where reaction with the next (M) is to occur; (c) a buffer is added to the treated site, to neutralize acid, and the acid-containing reagent removed by washing; and (d) the procedure is repeated until ON of the required sequence and length are produced.
