A metal separator with metal detector (17) and metal removal device (20) is located along a conveyor track. The detector issues a signal about the size of a detected metal part (29). The length of separating period is extended dependent upon the size of the part. A time delay dependent upon the part size begins at the point of detection, or the point, at which the removal device has reached its removal position (36). The time delay is initiated by a signal issued by a delay unit.
