Process for operating a reforming device comprises introducing a feed stream (2) to a first reformer unit (1); removing a waste stream (3) from the reformer unit; deviating a partial stream (4) from the waste stream and introducing to the feed stream so that a circulating stream is partially formed. An Independent claim is also included for a reforming device comprising a first reformer unit (1), a valve, an inlet stream (8) and an outlet stream (15). A line (14) connects a waste stream from the first reformer unit to the feed stream fed to the reformer unit. The device also has a heater. Preferred Features: The circulating stream is heated and conveyed by a pump (5). The circulating stream flows through a second reformer unit (6) and is heated by partial oxidation of hydrocarbons. The ignition temperature of both reformer units is less than 20, preferably 10, especially 5 seconds.
