Method for analysis of a data carrier between its two ends using a modem (1) that comprises a transceiver amplifier (2), a data and program memory, a signal processor (3) and a spectrum analyzer (5) in the form of a FFT module for analysis of an incoming signal. The modem can be requested from its remote end to carry out a spectrum analysis of the data carrier (7) and to transmit characteristic values back to the remote end. Independent claims are also included for: (1) A modem for transferring digital data between two ends of a data carrier; (2) The use of a data transfer modem as an analysis device for determining the quality of a twin wire connection.
