The bonding material, to bind oil contaminants in a liquid and especially water, has a polypropylene base material (100) together with 0.5 wt.% popcorn (101), as granules in a random layer. The polypropylene/popcorn granules have channels open to the outside. The granules have a peripheral diameter of 0.125-4.0 mm. Independent claims are also included for: (1) an assembly to produce the oil-bonding granules, with a chopping unit fitted with a blade system of at least four blades rotating around an axis, within a housing. An upper opening in the housing is a feed point for the raw material. A lower housing section is concentric to the rotating blades, leaving a ring gap between the blades and the housing wall, and with an outlet opening which is opened at intervals to take off the chopped material; and (2) A further INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for a water cleaning system, with a closed container filled with the polypropylene/popcorn granules. The container has a water inflow and a separated outflow.
