The monitoring system includes a sensor chain (SK1) along the platform edge (4) and is installed at a vertical distance (a1) to this, consisting of laser scanners (LS1;LS11,LS12...) overlapping each other forming first protection fields (S1;S11,S12...), which respectively transmit a light curtain (5) essentially vertical, pulsed parallel to the longitudinal direction (x) of the train (Z) being monitored with light spread out fanwise, in the region of the passenger entry sides of the carriage (3). The transmitting angle and the transit time of the reflected laser light pulse, product a standard profile of the first protection field (S1) or however in the event of an obstacle a disturbance profile. By the connecting together of all the laser scans (LS1) of the sensor chain (SK1), the resulting profile of the first protection field (S1) produced by the sensor chain (SK1), is suppliable to an evaluation circuit (8). The evaluation circuit in the event of a standard profile, causes the giving of a departure signal or with automatic travel systems, causes a release of the train, or in the case of a disturbance profile, prevents the departure of the train, so long as the disturbance persists.
