Surface layer thickness measurement method in which laser light incident on and reflected from the surface of a workpiece is used to determine the thickness of a surface layer according to the Bouger-Lambert law. According to the method the laser radiation is modulated to create a specific measurement frequency using a band pass filter. The intensity of incident (14) and reflected light (11) is measured.
