Preparation of cyclic carboxylic acid orthoester fluorides (I) comprises: (a) reacting a bis-(alkylthio)-carbenium salt (II) with an organic compound (III) containing at least two hydroxy groups in presence of base; and (b) oxidatively fluoro-desulfurizing the obtained thio-orthoester (IV) (preferably in situ) using a fluorinating agent and an oxidizing agent. An independent claim is included for new cyclic carboxylic acid orthoester fluorides of formula (I').
