Method for determining the volume flow rate of a liquid in proportion to the amount of liquid flowing over a weir or some such structure. The measurement edge (1) is broken in at least one point to form a flow contraction (E). The shape of the contraction is constant and the height (H) of the fluid or the fluid column above the fixed measurement edge in the area of the contraction is exactly measured and from it the volume flow rate.
