Sensor device for detecting biometric characteristics, especially fingerprints using a biometric sensor chip (20) with a support plate (10) on which a finger is placed. The plate has an electro-mechanical transducer (30) that causes the sensor chip to vibrate. Sensor chip and transducer work in conjunction with a controller. Reflected signals from the finger shows the presence of moving particles in the blood due to the Doppler effect, such an effect is not present when a finger is not in contact with the sensor device.
