Non-invasive method for reduction of adipose tissue, or the proportion of fat in other tissue, of humans or animals, comprises illuminating photosensitizer molecules (I) in, or near, the cells to be destroyed to produce a photodynamic effect that (in)directly kills the cells. ACTIVITY : Anorectic. Samples of cultured white adipose tissue from rabbits were incubated with 5 MicroM pheophorbide a for 24 hours at 37 [deg]C, then irradiated with ultra-violet A (UVA) light for 20 minutes. All cells were dead when examined 24 hours later; compare 90 % survival of cells treated with pheophorbide only and 78 % survival for cells treated with light only. MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given.
