Intermediate layers (1,2) of varying stiffness and damping or again corresponding multilayer intermediate layers are arranged below the rails and the sleepers (17) bear directly on the ballast bed, composed of ballast grains graded 0-56. The underside of the sleeper is fitted with sharp-edged projections (11) typically of stone or steel and the space between sleepers is filled out by compacted ballast or removable concrete prefabricates (7) toothed to the sleepers either side.
