Reacting carbon-containing solids in a hot gas stream at 600-2000 deg C with gaseous and/or vaporous constituents of the gas stream comprises passing the hot gas stream through a hot gas filter reactor (1); and fixing at least 50 wt.% of the solids on the filter surface of the reactor for at least 5 seconds to convert at least one part of the solids by chemical reaction. Preferred Features: The hot gas stream is a gas from combustion or gasification of solid fuels, preferably a combustion gas from gasification of biomass which contains flue dust. The solids adhering to the filter surface of the reactor are periodically removed and recycled in the combustion or gasification process. The maximum carbon content of the solids removed from the hot gas filter reactor is 5 wt.%.
