The method involves representing the data using at least one chemical substance applied as data tracks in a variable spatial arrangement and/or quantity and/.or in combination with other chemical substances to a data medium. The logical records can be read out again by chemical analysis of the data tracks. The substances can be inorganic, metals, semi-metals or combinations of metals and semi-metals. Independent claims are also included for the following: a data medium for chemically coded data storage, use of the method for long-term data storage (archiving) and use of the method in areas likely to be subjected to radioactive radiation, extreme temperatures, strong magnetic or electric fields, surface abrasions or corrosion.
