Permanent magnet consists of a superconducting ceramic composite material made up of a non-superconducting finely dispersed phase in a highly textured superconducting ceramic matrix. The matrix is made from a superconducting phase of the composition: REnAEm(Cu1-xMx)3O7+=D (where n = 1-1.5; m = 2-1.5; DELTA = -0.8 to 0.2; and AE = Ba, Sr and/or Ca). The non-superconducting finely dispersed phase is a cuprate of the composition (RE2BaCuO5)a (where a = 1 or 2). The superconducting phases contains Li, Mg, Zn, Ni or Pd. Inclusions of 2-25 wt.% Ag and/or Ag alloys are distributed in the composite material. Preferred Features: The RE in the matrix is at least 2 or 3 of Y, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Er and Yb. AE is Ba, preferably a mixture of Ba and Ca and Sr. The magnet is in the form of a cylinder.
