The method involves influencing the signal level of the data transmission channels and measuring the quality of the data transmission or a correlated value for the individual channels. On detecting a mutual non-linear influence of the channels the signal level in at least one channel is inhibited. Independent claims are also included for the following: a WDM system for optical data transmission.
