The method involves at least partly charging or discharging the piezoelectric actuator (100) by applying an electrical current to vary its length. The operating situation of the internal combustion engine is detected and the time derivative of the voltage that can be tapped at the piezoelectric actuator during the charge/discharge time is selected depending on the operating situation. Independent claims are also included for the following: a controller for controlling a fuel injection system and a fuel injection system.
