A hydrophilic coating composition for coating surfaces containing a finely divided oxide and a surface modifier is new. An Independent claim is also included for coating of surfaces with the composition involving the steps: (a) application of the composition in a solvent to the surface to be coated at room temperature, and (b) removal of solvent at room temperature.
