Process for maintaining an open area as an escape route in the event of fire, especially a gallery walkway (9, 10, 11) with a handrail in a multistory building (1) having a light well (8), comprises pulling a rapidly moving fire protection wall (18, 19) between the walkway and the light well when the fire alarm (13, 14) is activated and the smoke and heat outlet (12) is opened. The walkway is cut off and the smoke/heat pull in the light well is supported by the smooth wall design. An Independent claim is also included for a system for carrying out the above process. Preferred Features: Each floor is equipped with its own fire protection wall.
