Production of a chalcogenide halide of the ABC2 type comprises arranging metallic precursor layers of elements A and B; chalcogenizing with simultaneous optical process control; irradiating the layer succession AB with light from a coherent light source and surface chalcogenizing to form the ABC2 phase. Preferred Features: Precursor A is Cu or Ag. Precursor B is Ga or Al. Precursor C is S or Se.
