In the preparation of aryl compounds (I) by cross coupling reaction of a substituted aryl compound (II) with a Grignard reagent (III) in presence of a nickel catalyst (IV), a mixture of (II) and (IV) is dosed with (III) at the reaction temperature. Independent claims are also included for: (a) the preparation of nickel catalyst precursor materials, by charging a carrier material in presence of an aqueous solution of nickel (II) salt(s) and a base; (b) the preparation of nickel catalysts (IV'), by: (i) charging a carrier material in presence of an aqueous solution of nickel (II) salt(s) and a reducing agent; or (ii) reducing a charged carrier materials obtained as in (a); and (c) the preparation of (I) from haloaromatic compounds (II') and (III), using (IV') as catalyst.
