Process for minimizing the electric arc stream during refiring in a metal-protective gas welding process comprises activating an adjustment at the start of a short circuit and is active for the duration of the short circuit which increases the energy input when a characteristic threshold value S1 is not reached (phase A) and stops the energy input on reaching the threshold value (phase B). Preferred Features: Both phases are repeated until the short circuit is stopped.
