The locking device for especially the seat in a motor vehicle has a locking pawl (14) upon which acts the force of a spring element (22) to keep the seat section (10) in the in-use position, and upon which additionally acts a force-accumulating element (24). Depending upon the pivoted position of the locking pawl the rotational moments which are produced by the force components (F) of the force-accumulating element act upon the locking pawl in opposite directions. The force-accumulating element may be a leg spring or a tension spring.
