Blood filter with by-pass engaged and disengaged at intervals, removes heparin from patient blood

A filter assembly removes heparin from blood in an extra-corporal blood circulation system. The filter has an inlet (15) and a filter chamber (32) containing a filter medium containing a neutralizing agent (33) and discharges to an outlet (18). The filter has esp. a filter chamber by-pass (37) which may be engages or disengaged as required. An Independent claim is also included for a process to remove heparin from blood employing a filter whose surface has a cationic compound to capture heparin and incorporating two or more permanently cationic groups. The groups have two long-chained alkyl radicals on their surface esp. poly-olefins, polyester and polyurethane foam. The filter by-pass is engaged and disengaged from time to time as required, directing blood through the filter.
