System (10) has needle type periodontal probe (12) in the point (28) of which is a miniature thermal sensor (30) that is formed using a miniature thermal element (32). The system also has an electronic unit (18) with first and second inputs (54, 56), whereby the first input (54) is provided for connection of the miniature thermo-sensor and the second is connected to a reference temperature from a patient temperature measurement unit (16). The electronic unit comprises amplifier (46), ADC (48) and display (52). Optimally the periodontal probe used is one conforming to World Health Organization standards.
