A process for operating a direct current arc furnace comprises feeding flushing and/or process gas through nozzles or stones in the floor of the container that holds the melt (5). The gas is supplied with an intensity that causes the melt surface to build up, reducing the distance between the melt and the electrode, so the arc is deflected to the side of the built-up area.
