The gateau/cake lifting device takes the form of a plate consisting of two pivotable flat plate halves (4) which are joined by a hinge (1) and are provided with handles (3). Also claimed is a method for using such a device. It involves decoration of the gateau/cake on the lifting device, placing of the latter onto a flat surface serving as a base for the decorated gateau/cake, and removal of the device by pivoting its halves.
