The jump starting detection device (10) has a control element (20), e.g. an electronic contact, which detects the opening movement of a cover unit (16), fitting over a battery terminal (12) for connection of a jump lead in its closed position. The cover unit and the control element may be formed integral with one another. An Independent claim for a method for detecting jump starting of an automobile engine is also included.
