In an electro-optical liquid crystal display with an alignment layer for in-plane switching and liquid crystal medium with positive dielectric anisotropy, the medium contains 5-alk(en)yl-2-(3-fluoro- or 3,5-difluoro-4-isothiocyanato)-1,3-dioxane compound(s)(I). In an electro-optical liquid crystal display with an alignment layer for in-plane switching and liquid crystal medium with positive dielectric anisotropy, the medium contains 5-alk(en)yl-2-(3-fluoro- or 3,5-difluoro-4-isothiocyanato)-1,3-dioxane compound(s) of formula (I): R1 = an alk(en)yl group with up to 15 carbon (C) atoms, which may be mono-substituted by cyano (CN) or trifluoromethyl (CF3) or at least mono-substituted by halogen and in which one or more methylene (-CH2-) groups may be replaced by oxygen (O), sulfur (S), cyclobutan-1,3-diyl, carbonyl (-CO-), carboxy (-CO-O- or -O-CO-) or carbonato (-O-CO-O), without adjacent O atoms; L = hydrogen (H) or fluorine (F). An Independent claim is also included for this liquid crystal medium.
