The system has arrangements for detecting a defined engine operating state, for detecting the catalyser inlet and outlet temperatures, for feeding a constant reduction agent concentration into the exhaust gas flow, for computing a theoretical exothermic parameter, the actual exothermic parameter and a current hydrocarbon conversion value and for displaying when the current conversion value exceeds a target emission capability threshold. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method of on-board vehicle monitoring; (2) a method of monitoring the performance of a catalyser.
